CURRENT WORK
Gwlad Arall, Another Country
I have been working on a series of paintings inspired by documentary photographer, Malcolm Glover’s, photographic essay, Gwlad Arall, which translates as Another Country, in English. In 1985, Malcolm spent a year documenting life of the rural community of the Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales. At the time, he felt as if he had been transported back into the 1950s, in part because of its remoteness from urban life. As poet RS Thomas wrote, “You cannot live in the present, at least not in Wales’
I met Malcolm at the launch of the book of this photographic essay and was immediately struck by the everyday strangeness of the images and wanted to make some work inspired by them. At the time of writing, this is an ongoing project.
The book ‘Gwlad Arall’ is available from Silverhill Press. View Malcom’s photography here: www.malcolmglover.co.uk
I have also been continuing my work on children and animals. I’m painting the moments of encounter - the focus, the instinctive connection between human and non human, see new works below, ‘Duckling’ and ‘Boy and Goose’.
